72-year-old charged after young adults struck by bat

A 72-year-old Meaford man who police allege attacked a group of young adults with a baseball bat after they’d set off fireworks July 4 was charged with assault.

Grey Bruce OPP said officers were called at 11:59 p.m. to a Meaford residence on Sideroad 25. The young people told police they’d returned to a cottage after setting off some fireworks at the water and were confronted by a man with a baseball bat.

He struck three victims with the bat in the shoulder areas, then smashed several windows of multiple vehicles before leaving the property, a police news release said July 7.

Two victims went to hospital by ambulance for treatment of injuries which police said didn’t threaten their lives. The third victim needed no treatment.

Robert Gullacher faces three counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of mischief. He was released on an undertaking with a Sept. 10 court date.
