One person was taken to hospital and damage was minimal after a fire on Owen Sound’s east side early Wednesday morning.
The Owen Sound Fire Department responded to the fire just after 6 a.m. on 4th Avenue East, which had already been put out by other residents of the apartment.
Owen Sound Fire Chief Doug Barfoot said the individual who lived in the unit where the fire started was able to get out on their own, while other occupants of the building used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
“They did an excellent job,” Barfoot said. “They grabbed the fire extinguisher and had the fire out for us when we got there.”
The one occupant was taken by ambulance to hospital, with Owen Sound police confirming that it was for precautionary reasons to get checked out.
Barfoot said a smoke detector in the hallway advised the others of the fire and with a fire extinguisher close by, they were able to put out the fire before it caused very much damage.
“They were able to keep damage to a minimum,” Barfoot said, adding the cause has been deemed accidental.
