COVID-19 roundup: no new cases reported locally for third straight day

The COVID-19 case number in Grey-Bruce remains at 99 as no new cases of the disease were reported in Tuesday’s daily situation report released by the Grey Bruce Health Unit.

Eighty-eight cases have now recovered leaving 10 active cases reported in the region, none of which are currently hospitalized.

No deaths have been attributed to the disease locally and there are no local long-term care or retirement homes with a declared COVID-19 outbreak.

Owen Sound remains the municipality with the highest prevalence of reported cases at 47, followed by Southgate at 12.

The 158th Owen Sound Emancipation Festival is going digital amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Normally a three-day festival, which was traditionally a homecoming of sorts for the descendants of those who escaped to the area through the Underground Railroad, will take on a new look this year.

Organizers are currently raising funds through grants and donations and are in the process of preparing a program to modify the event for online audiences.

The Emancipation Festival was established in 1862, when Owen Sound and area residents held the first Owen Sound Emancipation Celebration Picnic to commemorate the British Commonwealth Emancipation Act of Aug. 1, 1834. The event grew to include the United States Emancipation Proclamation that followed on Jan. 1, 1863.

It includes the longest-running emancipation picnic in North America, held each year on Aug. 1.

The Town of Saugeen Shores is encouraging local shoppers to follow the advice of public health officials and wear a cloth or similar non-medical face mask when entering local retail settings.

The Town made the announcement on their Facebook page Tuesday alongside a picture of mask-wearing councillors taking part in a Zoom online conference.

According to the message, businesses across the community have been voicing concerns that some members of the public are not wearing masks while visiting their stores.

During a webinar last week with regional business leaders and the general business community, Dr. Ian Arra stressed that ensuring physical distancing was the highest priority in modifying business operations in preparation for reopening.

Some stores in Ontario have made wearing a mask mandatory. Recently, the CEO of Longo’s grocery stores announced they would not permit shoppers to enter their stores without a mask.

Ontario’s health minister said the province is heading in a “very promising” direction after 230 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Tuesday.

The increase brings the province-wide tally of the disease to 31,090.

“Most days there are now more resolved than new daily cases of COVID-19, meaning fewer active cases of people with the virus,” Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a tweet. “Today, with 337 more resolved and 230 new cases, there are now 107 fewer active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, an important downward trend.”

The province announced Tuesday that child care centres would reopen June 26 with strict protocols in place to allow parents to return to work.

Children and staff will be in groups of 10 or less and be screened prior to entry.

Encouraging numbers at hospitals are also trending downward. Province-wide, there are 600 people in the hospital battling COVID-19, 116 of those in intensive care, and 88 on ventilators.

Over 65 per cent of all reported COVID-19 cases have been in the GTA, which remains in Stage 1 of the province’s economic reopening while other regions plan to move to Stage 2 later this week.
