COVID-19 roundup: Chesley LTC home outbreak over

Grey-Bruce saw no new reported cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours ended mid-afternoon Monday.

And the area’s only current long-term care home outbreak was declared over Saturday.

Elgin Abbey Continuing Care Residence for Seniors in Chesley was subject to outbreak protocols beginning June 18, after an asymptomatic staff member who doesn’t work directly with residents tested positive.

The outbreak was declared over Saturday, with no further transmission to any case past the first case, the daily situation report from the Grey Bruce Health Unit said Monday.

Twenty-eight healthcare workers in Grey-Bruce have contracted the virus to date. There have been 112 cases total, with nine currently active.

The number of recovered cases was 98 Monday, with five referred to other health units. There was no one hospitalized due to COVID Monday and there have been no deaths in Grey-Bruce due to COVID-19 reported during the entire pandemic.

Visits resumed Monday in South Bruce Grey Health Centre hospitals for acute-care patients. One designated visitor may visit once per day. Visiting guidelines are to be made available on the SBGHC’s website.

Visitor restrictions remain in place for the emergency department, diagnostic imaging and lab, unless the patient is a child or requires a support person, a hospital corporation news release said.

On June 15, the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health issued a communication to Ontario hospitals recognizing the importance of family and caregiver presence for patient well-being, and recommending that hospitals begin planning for the resumption of visiting, the SBGHC release said.

If you need to get diagnostic tests done at any Grey Bruce Health Services hospital lab, you’ll need an appointment now. Walk-ins are no longer allowed.

Anyone with an OHIP requisition who can use a private lab for routine blood work is encouraged to do so, a GBHS news release said.

“GBHS hospital labs are focusing on blood work for in-patients, urgent cases, pre-surgical patients and those individuals whose blood work is essential for determining same-day medication dosage and/or treatment approaches.”

Lab waiting rooms aren’t designed to accommodate COVID protocols of six feet between patients and appoints are more convenient for patients too, Gary Sims, GBHS president and CEO is quoted saying in the release.

To make an appointment for lab services at any GBHS hospital, call 1-888-525-0553, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Booking staff will do their best to coordinate lab appointments with other scheduled appointments, including oncology appointments, to reduce multiple hospital visits for patients, the release said. Some lab hours have been extended. See https://www.gbhs.on.ca/lab/for details.
